What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the mine shaft incident is detailed in the live show the prequel play.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is revealed about his research, the container would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
