Vince Gilligan Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
