United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with Eleven Nations

Toxic substance caution sign

British authorities has added an additional eleven more nations to its official advisory register regarding the dangers of methanol contamination from adulterated spirits.

This updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only last month, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following several notable cases including the tragic demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for human consumption.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office representative the minister emphasized that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer said.
