Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined the Thunder in 2019.

The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the game, the team's title banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were presented with their title rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the chance to get some early revenge on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
