Food item hurled by demonstrator allegedly exploded and caused yellow spot on border agent, trial told
A American border officer has declared in court he could feel through his protective gear the force of a sandwich launched at him by a DC demonstrator, who has faced court proceedings for physical attack.
Customs and Border Patrol agent Gregory Lairmore told the jury the food item "shattered all over him" and he "detected the vegetables and mustard" on his uniform.
No party challenges that the defendant, in his thirties, did in fact lob vulgar language and a deli-style sandwich at officers assigned by the former president to patrol the Washington DC in the summer month.
The occurrence was recorded on video and spread across the internet, making the accused a symbol of dissent in the federal district to the former president.
State lawyers originally tried to secure major offense allegations against Mr Dunn, but a judicial committee chose not to indict him.
Trump's deployment of military personnel to Washington DC this warmer months sparked protest from some of the city's residents, who considered it a political use of the armed forces.
Based on court papers, Mr Dunn came near a law enforcement team at about late evening on August 10, describing them "authoritarians" and shouting: "What is your purpose? I don't want you in my city!"
The trial observed a reenactment from the agent on the trial day as he took the stand against Mr Dunn.
"I could feel it through my ballistic vest," he said of the sandwich's impact, noting that an vegetable piece remained from his police radio and mustard marked his clothing.
The defendant's attorney, his legal representative, said in her opening statement that hurling the food item was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, create physical damage".
But government attorney the prosecutor said Mr Dunn must be held accountable.
"Regardless of identity, you should not throwing stuff at people because you're mad," the prosecutor declared.
Following the reported incident was revealed, the defendant was fired from his employment as a legal assistant in the federal legal agency.
