Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
